Rallye Elba-XXIII Trofeo Locman Italy: the first leg goes to the Lancia Rally 037 of Bianchini.
The driver from San Marino took the lead in the standings from the third special stage, the first of today. Behind the Porsche of the Lombard Domenicali and the Porsche of the Sienese Salvini. Two unfortunate that pointed upward: the leader Da Zanche left the race for engine failure after the first stage, the Norwegian Jensen went off the road during the sixth. From today, enters the race also "Elba Graffiti" the regularity event and the Ferrari too. Tomorrow the grand finale with six other stages.
San Marino´s Marco Bianchini is the leader of the XXIII Rallye Elba Storico-Trofeo Locman Italy, whose first stages were run between yesterday evening and today, with eight stages.
At the wheel of the Lancia Rally 037, car admitted at the start of the European Championship without gaining points for the ranking, Bianchini took the lead from the third special stage, the first today, after starting the challenge with caution, and then be able to control the attacks that came from several contenders, especially the Sienese Alberto Salvini and the Lombard Raoul Marco Domenicali, both with a Porsche 911.
The race started at 20.00 last night and the first special stage was the prerogative of the driver from Valtellina, Lucio Da Zanche, the Italian Rally Championship provisional leader. After scoring the best time on the special stage "Due Colli", he withdrawn for an engine failure. The breakdown of Da Zanche´s Porsche, with its loss of oil on the roadway, has created performance issues, first of all to Bianchini; the second special stage, the "show" in the town of Portoferraio (headquarter of this year race), was attended by thousands of spectators, and saw the record signed by the Sicilian Maurizio Plano (Porsche 911).
After two stages, therefore, the general classification saw Salvini on top, followed by Plano, with the Norwegian Walter Jensen (Lancia Rally 037) to complete the podium. This morning Bianchini took the lead.
At the end of the first day, Bianchini leads the standings with 50" of gap from Salvini and 1´00" from Domenicali. During the morning, Plano has left the scene, due to an accident on SS 3, and then was the turn of Jensen that left the competition during the SS 6.
Problems of delay before the mid-day regroupment for the current leader of the European Category 3 Brazzoli (Porsche 911), he also had problems last night after the oil loss of Da Zanche, even going into a spin. Two difficulties for the driver from Cuneo, which have moved him away from the top.
Category 1 is in the hands of Capsoni (Renault Alpine A110), he took the leadership after the third stage, taking the place of Salvi (Porsche 911 S), with the Finnish Liukkonen (Ford Escort) on the second place. Category 2 is in the hands of Salvini, second place for Carissimi (Porsche), whose race has been affected by a nasty flu and on third place there is Domenicali, forth place for Ambrosoli.
Talking about overall classification, the fifth place sees the spectacular Lancia Rally 037 of "Pedro", transparent for the ranking.
Among the major withdrawals, it´s registered Giovanni Galleni (Opel Ascona 400) for wheel drive problems on the fourth special stage and Roberto Bigoni (Talbot Lotus), for mechanical problems.
Tomorrow, Saturday 24 September, the grand finale, with further six special stages: the event will start at 07,45 and the arrival is foreseen in Capoliveri at 16.35.
